I am still on the fence about Sunset45. This is my third box and I’m still kind of perplexed about it. There are a LOT of things I like about it, but there are still some things I’m not so excited about. Maybe I need to switch up the style I receive? There are three options you can choose: The Lavish box ($30/mo), The Classics box ($30/mo) and the Editor’s Choice box ($20/mo.) Right now I get the Lavish box. Last month I thought about possibly switching to the Classics box and I haven’t done that yet but what I did do is ask to see if I could change my preferences to receive all silver jewelry so they accommodated that swiftly and easily but I’m still not entirely sure I made the right choice. I think I am going to email them to see if I can switch to the Classics box for my January box.
Anyway, enough of my ramblings, onto the box!
The theme this month is Queen of the Stone Age, and predictably, there are a lot of stone/rock themed pieces. What I always love about Sunset 45 is how thoughtfully curated these boxes are. I really love how they put together a sort of “inspiration board” of different designers’ runway shots to give us context of why they chose the pieces they did.
I’m going to start with the bad news. This necklace is one that I simply do not understand as part of the collection. Simply put, it just looks cheap and plastic and nothing like the pieces we just saw on their designer inspiration card! I’m not expecting super high end from this box but I’ve come to expect higher quality from Sunset 45 and this necklace is just… NOT. They said this necklace is worth $36 and I have a hard time believing that. I just keep staring at the necklace and $36 just makes no sense. This was also the first piece I opened so I was a bit apprehensive about the rest of the collection.
The next necklace I got was MUCH better than the previous one and also seemed to go along with their theme in a way that made sense. However, the colors and overall design just don’t do it for me. Unlike the white necklace, I do feel like this one is more stylish and this might be another woman’s style but unfortunately, it is not mine. This necklace is also stated to retail $36. I don’t really believe that it is, but I can understand it a bit more than the white necklace.
Onto the good news! I really liked this big, chunky ring! At first, I wasn’t a fan of it but the longer I stared at it, the more I liked it. It has an adjustable band so I can wear it on my bigger fingers, where it would look better than on a ring finger. I am picturing wearing this with a casual jeans and a t-shirt to give it a bit of edge.
More good news! I REALLY love this bracelet. It doesn’t photograph well and I’m not sure that is entirely my fault this time. However, I think this bracelet is very cool. I really like the look of the wires over the smooth stone and I like the matte silver of the band. The wires kind of remind me of guitar strings which gives it an edgy look. This is definitely a jeans and t-shirt bracelet, though I wouldn’t pair it with the ring above. These are both big pieces and will do well on their own! They say this ring retails for $22 and I actually can see that more than the previous necklaces. This cuff retails for $28.
And for the earrings… These were meant to match the necklace that I didn’t so much care for but I actually do like the earrings on their own. They are black so that means they can obviously go with a number of looks and their pear shape makes them a little more interesting than regular studs. I can’t quite picture the outfit I will wear with these but I am keeping them on deck for when I do. These earrings were included in the $36 set with the necklace so I’m unsure of their retail value on their own.
Final Grade: C
Out of the 5 items I received, I only really loved 2 of them, while a third was just OK. I really do love the ring and the bracelet though, and these are pieces that I probably would have never picked out myself and I am glad I have them in my collection. However, the necklaces were a big NOPE for me, and I wear necklaces more regularly than any other piece of jewelry. The white necklace just seemed laughably out of place and super cheap, while the other one was just not anything I would ever wear. I am going to switch to the Classics box if I can and see if that box is a better fit for me.
