I tried Birchbox once about a year ago and was not impressed with the box I got. I canceled it after a month at the time, but I thought I’d try it again because there was a sweet promotion going on for a free Beauty Blender with the purchase of a new subscription. I can’t pass up a free Beauty Blender, that would be ridiculous.
Birchbox sends 5 sample items in a cute little box each month for $10. They are easily one of the biggest subscription boxes around, which is why they have awesome sign-up offers like free BeautyBlenders. They now also have an option where you can pay an additional $20 for 2 full-sized beauty products. Since the products they send are pretty high-end, that may be a good upgrade to take advantage of at some point.
My box was completely different than Lauren’s box, and it’s a little hit or miss for my liking. You are able to fill out a beauty profile with your preferences, but apparently the boxes are very loosely based on that (like I have my preferences set to no makeup or perfume). Well, let’s see what I got:
Jurlique Herbal Recovery Advanced Serum – I actually like this one. I’ve been noticing that my skin has been increasingly dry, so preventing fine lines has become My Thing. I’m looking forward to giving this a go – it’s meant to fight signs of aging.
Marcelle Hydra-C 24H Energizing Hydrating Gel – This was the other item I liked in this box. It’s described as a lightweight, vitamin-packed hydrator that brightens skin. Sounds great to me!
Parlor by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray – I don’t understand sea salt sprays. I have like 4 of them, and they all do the same thing – nothing. It just makes my hair slightly crispy and gets all over my hands whenever I run my fingers through it. Is it meant for short, choppy styles? I don’t understand it. Someone explain sea salt sprays to me.
W3LL People The Expressionist Bio Extreme Mascara – I have no need for mascara, I get lash extensions so I never have to wear it. It seems that this is a great mascara, but it’s going to be gifted to my sister (who is a total mascara pro).
Raw Spirit Fragrances in Citadelle – Ugh, a perfume sample. This seems like such a waste of space in the box, as I specifically asked for no perfume samples. Oh well, it’s here and it smells ok. The insert says it has “notes of Haitian vetiver, pear, lemon, bergamot, spices, and woods.”
Final Rating: B+
I can’t be too harsh on a box that included a free BeautyBlender, but I’m not yet convinced that it’s worth receiving every month. Lauren’s box was awesome, so that gives me hope. Plus everyone seems to love Birchbox, so maybe I got an off box. Opinion to be continued…
