As most of you know, my husband and I just bought our first house in April. While we have bought a few pieces and it looks decent from a day-to-day perspective, I really want to give our guest room a makeover so it can eventually double as my Home Office/Blogging HQ.
When I saw this picture on the shopping app “Keep” I fell in love. I just adore the simplicity of it with the gold accents. Though while it’s my inspiration, I would obviously make it my own.
I love this Alex desk from IKEA. The best part? It’s only $169. The worst part? It costs about $150 to ship it. So… no desk for me until we have a chance to get to IKEA with a big enough car that can hold the desk. Womp, womp.
I also love this carpenter brass table lamp from cb2.
I’ve been looking for interesting prints from minted.com. I haven’t chosen any yet but here are some that I am interested in:
Cutting the air Wall Art Print:
OK, well you get the general idea. I also have a white bookshelf so I’m looking for things to decorate it with.
Like this potted succulent with copper pot ($9.95):
Or this Colada Pineapple Vase ($5.95). I thought this could also be good to hold pens/desk supplies. I actually bought this so I can attest that the vase is a bit deep for pens but my mom gave me the idea to put some paper in the bottom. Perfect!
I also like this ai bud vase ($10.95), where maybe you could put a single, pretty, (perhaps fake?) flower to make the desk area a little cheerier.
This is totally unnecessary but while I’m looking at things on the internet to buy, why NOT a gold trashcan ($49.95)?
You can’t have a gold themed office without a gold stapler. I mean, that would just be embarrassing. Luckily, I bought this Nate Berkus Limited Edition Swingline Stapler from Target for $15.99.
And then I had to get the Nate Berkus gold scissors for $16.99 because I’m not a monster.
I will be real with y’all– A big reason that I am working so hard to make this office area so pretty is because I am hoping to one day do blog videos and when I start that, I want to have a lovely, well lit, white-centric background so I don’t look like an amateur. I keep a lot of my Real Desk things at the built in desk in the kitchen. I don’t want to say that this is a Fake Desk but this one is definitely more style over substance for that reason. I’m almost trying to build a set that also makes my house prettier in the process! I still don’t think I can ever rationalize a gold trashcan but I hope to get to a finished point by the end of this year! Once I get an actual desk and start decorating, I will take pictures and post them!
I bet you could find that same shape/style of trash can pretty cheap in silver, then all you need is gold spray paint.
You are SO right! I didn’t even think about that. I am not usually a DIY-er. I am a BIY-er… Buy It Yourself. Hahaha. But seriously, I think even *I* could spray paint a trash can gold.
Celeste is right on! IKEA stocks the same trash can, but in black, white or galvanized for $14.99. Even with a can of spray paint, still much more affordable (and justifiable!)
Happy decorating!
Pro tip: all of the IKEA furniture is flat packed so the desk won’t take up much room in the car. No need to wait or borrow a car unless you have a 2-seater. And even then it depends on the size of the trunk. I’ve been eyeballing that desk for myself too!
Also, you may find wall art you like at Art.com. That’s one of my go-to sites for walls.
I am still burned from the time I tried to get a mirror from Target into my car and failed, having to sadly take it back inside and return it as I wasn’t prepared to have anyone else come and help me. It is entirely possible I COULD fit the desk into my car (4D Honda Accord) but I don’t want to get there and fail. So I am trying to be patient. And I will need to browse Art.com. I haven’t ever looked there!
I am getting the feeling that this is a very, very integrated look. All of the colors, materials and lines reinforce a clean, cool, austere approach to the overall project. Consider the gold stapler and the gold trash can, the hard edged vases, metal frames, and even the touch of “green” is a smooth surfaced succulent in a geometric pot!
Consider introducing some element to soften or smooth things out. Consider elements that might give the eye a rest. In light of the yellow and gold in the scheme, why not try something with earth tones, perhaps a deep brown wooden sculpture or fabric wall hanging. A log shag rug in tan, khaki or chocolate might do the trick for the room but that might not work in terms of you video project as it would not be seen, correct?
Great art work.
