This month’s Raw Spice Bar was really interesting for me, as I had never even heard of these spices – Ethiopian spices! I absolutely love Ethiopian food but have never attempted to make it at home. The flavors are so complex and I just never thought I could ever nail it, but now that I’ve got these amazing spice blends I am SO excited to try.

Berbere Spice Pack: Berbere is That Spice that everyone who likes Ethopian food knows, even if they don’t know it (I didn’t). It’s used in wots (slow-cooked, melt-in-your-mouth meat or lentil stew), which is what is always on the menu at your local Ethiopian joint. A spicy hot blend of chiles, coriander, fenugreek, all spice, clove, nutmeg, ginger, and cardamon, it is a mix that I would have NEVER figured out on my own. As soon as I opened the pack I couldn’t help but inhale deeply.

Mitmita Spice Blend: This is also a super identifiable spice blend that I had never heard of – but absolutely knew the smell of. It’s mega hot, a hallmark of Ethiopian cuisine, but packed with pepper flavor. They suggest using it instead of sriracha as a condiment, but I am more likely to throw it on some potatoes or add it to literally anything that requires some extra va-va-voom. Ok, now I understand why they compare it to sriracha.

Pumpkin Pie Spice: This spice confused me at first, but that’s because I forgot it was November and pumpkin pie spice totally makes sense. Meant to be used as a savory version of typical pumpkin pie spices, this blend would be drool-worthy over some roasted squash or carrots. The recipe they included was for Ethiopian donuts that use ricotta, honey, and this spice blend. Tell me that does not sound incredible. I dare you.

Final Rating: A+

I can’t get enough of this subscription. My husband gets just as excited as I do about it, so it’s a great box that we share. We cook a lot so having these super unique spice blends around really comes in handy – we’ve even started structuring our weekly menus around what we get from RSB!
