My mailman managed to deliver my December Play by Sephora box without getting it stuck in my mailbox and subsequently stolen so that’s always a good thing.
Price: $10/month
Box Type: This is a beauty box that contains deluxe samples (and occasionally full-sized) products that can be found at Sephora.
Why you’ll love it: Ummmm, did you see it’s all fun products that come from Sephora? Some boxes will send you random products from brands you’ve never heard of before but Play! by Sephora will only send you brands from their own store – basically all high end fun things you are excited to try! Here’s a breakdown of the benefits:
- The awesome products, of course.
- The $10 you spend earns you Beauty Insider points if you are already part of their rewards program. (I’m VIB Rouge because I clearly have A Problem buying makeup.)
- Each month you will also receive a card that you can bring into Sephora that will earn you 50 additional bonus points on your purchase!
- The PLAY! BOOK outlines how to use the products, similar to the Allure Beauty Box Mini Mag
This was a pretty poor photograph of the little bag and card that comes with the box along with the card but I was in kind of a rush, so forgive me! I’m writing this from a Starbucks so I don’t have these things handy. But I do have my pictures and my opinions, so let’s see what I got in December…
Here is what we received in the December Play by Sephora box! Pretty good, eh? I love that Sephora always sends products from luxury brands that we all know.
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray ($31): I have tried this setting spray a few times and honestly, I can’t really tell a difference than when I wear it and when I don’t. Sometimes I wonder if this is an “Emperor has new clothes” type product or if people really see a difference and I’m the exception. I even bought the full-size version. I don’t know, I keep using it because I have it and I probably will keep using it. Do y’all use this and see a difference? Am I missing something? Send help.
Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara ($30): This was a good mascara. It doesn’t give me the volume that my Too Faced Better Than Sex does. But this is a decent every day mascara if you don’t want such a dramatic lool.
Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo ($23): I have heard about Drybar for years. All of the editors in my fashion magazines talked about getting their blowouts at Drybar and I had always wanted to go! At some point, Drybar smartly started selling hair products so that everyone could feel like a beauty editor in New York. They recently opened a Drybar location in Fort Worth, so I went for a blowout for my birthday last year and I really liked it. My curls didn’t last as long as I wanted them to but that is mostly because my birthday is in July and it was swealtering outside, but I still felt really special that day. This is a long story to say that I wish I liked the dry shampoo but I don’t like it as much as my drugstore dry shampoo. It does the job of soaking up oil but doesn’t give me the volume that I like.
SEPHORA Collection Cream Lip Stain in Always Red ($14): This is a super creamy lip color! I feel like this particular shade (swatched below) would be a little hard to wear without a lip liner because I’m afraid it’s a bit TOO creamy and might move a bit during a night out. That said, the formula is really nice and the price is good. I might get a lighter shade that is easier to wear, but it might be hard to choose because there are almost 40 colors to choose from! The SEPHORA makeup brand is getting better and better and their makeup is worth taking a closer look!
Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon ($65): The first time I tested this, I immediately ran to let Matt smell how amazing this scent is and then I went out and bought the full size bottle the very next day. Good job, Sephora. I have never been a fan of the Elizabeth and James Nirvana scents but Nirvana Bourbon changed everything! They describe it as “An intoxicating blend of vanilla bourbon and spiced wood with a delicate floral note.” I’ve always gravitated towards vanilla scents and this is sort of a grown up version. If you have the chance to smell it at a store, definitely check it out. And if you buy it, we can be perfume twins!
It looks like I was supposed to receive a Make Up For Ever primer but it wasn’t in my box. 🙁
Final Grade: A
For a December box, Play by Sephora hit the nail on the head: A mascara to try, a makeup spray to set everything, a dry shampoo to bring your hair from day to night. a bright red festive lip color and a perfume to round everything out. (A primer would have REALLY rounded it out but oh well. 🙂 )

If you call Sephora they will send you a replacement primer. (In a huge box, but still!). When they had the box with Estée Lauder Edit product, that little box empty. I immediately called them (they had also sent my box to my address in another state…) and they sent me the product.
Oh that’s good to know! Thanks for the tip! xo
I will definitely be checking out that Elizabeth and James perfume… I also love vanilla based scents, and it can be hard to find ones that aren’t super sicky sweet. I mean, Bath & Body Works’ “Warm Vanilla Sugar” was fine in high school, but I’m a grown up lady now!!
I think you’d really like it! Let me know what you think! 🙂
