This month’s Birchbox was a little…. odd. More on that below. I ended up really liking it and it all worked out, but it was a weird start to the new year in terms of subscription box mishaps.

BIRCHBOX

Price: $10/month

Box Type: Beauty products, 5-6 deluxe samples

Why you’ll love it: Top brands, good sized samples of solid products. Their new customization process learns what you like so when you review your boxes on birchbox.com you’ll guarantee more personalized boxes. Plus, you can pick a sample you’d love to see in your box or select a pre-made box instead of leaving it to chance!

Let’s see what was inside the box I chose this month and why it was so strange:

R+Co Oblivion Clarifying Shampoo & Conditioner ($24/ea for full size): This was the sample I chose this month. Each month Birchbox lets you choose a sample that they curate your box around, a themed box, or a total surprise. The shampoo and conditioner was one of 4 or so samples that Birchbox let us choose from this month.

When my box arrived, not only were my R+Co samples inside, but so were all of the other sample choice. Literally all of the sample choices, that was my box this month. Super weird, right? What’s the point of choosing a sample if they’re just going to turn around and send you all of them? It’s definitely never happened before, but the customer service rep assured me it was correct. To make up for it, they let me choose a few samples that I’d like to try and sent them out immediately. It was a weird way to start 2017, but Birchbox’s customer service more than made up for it. Thanks, Birchbox!

Arrow Endure Water-Resistant Mascara ($20 for full size): I’m starting to come around to getting the weirdest Birchbox ever, mostly because this mascara is pretty awesome. Arrow is Birchbox’s own house brand that they launched recently, and so far it has been surprisingly solid.

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner ($22 for full size): I can’t tell if this is full size or not. If it’s not, it’s pretty damn close. I like this eyeliner a lot. I don’t usually use liquid eyeliner, but every once in a while I’ll go through a liquid phase.

Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment ($105 for full size): So many people I know swear by this treatment, but it’s unfortunately too harsh for my sensitive skin (which is why I didn’t pick it as my sample choice, Birchbox). It’s super expensive, so it’s great that this is a sample though!

Juliette Has a Gun perfume in Mmmm… ($100 for full size): While I really like this scent, I prefer not to get perfume samples (which is noted in my preferences, Birchbox – tsk, tsk.). This scent is a combo of vanilla, orange blossom, tonka bean (no clue what that is), and raspberry with undertones of neroli, ambroxan, sandalwood, geranium, jasmine, tuberose, and iris.

Final Rating: B

While I liked most of these items, I wasn’t expecting to get leftover samples from the sample choice this month. Birchbox did make up for it, but it was still a weird disappointment. Hopefully next month will be better!

xo,

Jill
