I was struggling to come up with a blog idea so I decided to search for beauty tags and found this one and thought it might be fun! So I challenge y’all to answer some of these questions yourself!

1. What is the one product you could not go without?

I think this is cheating, but I really love my Z-Palette of single shadows. They are a mix of Colourpop, Makeup Geek and Coloured Raine shadows, and this is my most used palette.

2. Favourite Makeup Brand

I think my favorite makeup brand is Colourpop. They don’t have every single product category – for example, they don’t have foundation – but truly, it’s only a matter of time. My love affair began with their Super Shock Shadows, but my love grew with their pressed powder shadows and palettes. They very briefly made nail polish, and I liked those, too! I also really like their Ultra Satin Lips, as they are matte but not uncomfortable. That said, I am moving away from the matte lip trend, and Colourpop just recently came out with a bunch of bullet lipsticks, their Lux Lipsticks. I recently ordered some but they haven’t arrived yet so I can’t give my full review. I also really love their lip liners. I don’t really care for the Colourpop Ultra Matte lips or their Lippie Stix, but others LOVE those products, they just aren’t for me personally. One of the best things about Colourpop is the price point – almost everything is under $10, which is great. You can spend $30 and get a ton of products to play with.

My honorable mention would be Marc Jacobs. I have loved every product of his I have tried. But unlike Colourpop, everything is pretty pricy. So that has prevented me from trying All The Things. But I would love to try All The Things. I love his bronzer, shadows and eye liners.

3. Who is your style inspiration?

I tend to have more of a classic look with a bit of an edge but weirdly, I don’t have any one person as an inspiration. However, I do tend to like Reese Witherspoon’s style. Let’s be real, I do not wear ball gowns, but if I did… I would choose one like Reese’s.

4. Do you remember the first makeup item you purchased?

I don’t know if this was the VERY first, but this one definitely sticks out in my memory: When I was in 3rd grade, I lived on an Air Force base, so it was very safe. So my best friend and I rode our bikes to random places around the base, like the movie theater and the BX. On one particular BX trip, I found a Cover Girl teal eyeshadow single in a Clearance bin for a dollar or two. I was DEFINITELY NOT ALLOWED to wear makeup at this time in my life, especially not teal eyeshadow. So I kept it in a secret box in my room, and would play with it secretly, then wash my face. Is it really any surprise I turned out the way I did?

(Melissa, did you use this for your rock-n-roll look?)

5. Who is your favorite beauty blogger or YouTuber?

I have a bunch of favorites but I think the number one spot goes to Mariah Leonard. I love makeup and at times I feel like I know all there is to know about it, but when I watch her channel, I almost always learn something. Her makeup style is very much that Glossier-cool girl, which isn’t always what I personally go for, but I just love watching her videos.

I know my mom is going to wonder why I didn’t say Jaclyn Hill, and that’s because she almost never uploads new videos anymore. I love watching her older videos because they are so instructional and like Mariah’s, I definitely learn things from them. But at this point, she doesn’t even load even one video a month, so I thought my FAVORITE spot should go to someone who is active on YouTube currently.

6. What are your top 5 makeup brands?

  1. Colourpop – See above.
  2. Makeup Geek – even though they haven’t released new products in awhile, her shadows are still some of my favorites!)
  3. Marc Jacobs Beauty – See above.
  4. Morphe – Morphe gets a bad rap because of Influencers constantly shilling their products, but I do really like the palettes I’ve gotten from them, and I use a lot of their brushes every day.
  5. Stila – I had a hard time coming up with a brand for number 5, as every brand I thought of, I only used one or two of their products, and that’s true with Stila also. But I do use their Heaven’s Hue highlighter almost every day, and I love their Glitter/Shimmer and Glows, so they get the fifth spot.

7. What is your top beauty tip?

I couldn’t think of anything groundbreaking, but something that I do is because I tend to experiment with makeup every day, I will plan out my makeup the night before when I’m picking out my outfit. That way, I go in with a plan versus just flailing around and taking up more time. Of course, there are times when I deviate from the plan, but that helps me get ready faster in the morning.

8. Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging with Jill because we loved subscription boxes and we were already essentially doing the work, as we were just telling each other about what we were getting. So we just decided to share our thoughts with the world. I had always wanted to start a beauty blog but I was afraid to do it by myself. I thought people would think I was vapid or dumb for publicly talking about my love of makeup. Starting a blog with a friend made me feel better about it.  Now I don’t care anymore. 🙂

9. Random Fact About Yourself?

I attended 6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 2 high schools. #MilitaryLife

10. Describe your dream makeup haul.

I think my dream makeup haul would basically just involve a shitload of money that I could spend on a few different sites: Sephora, Ulta, and the indie sites like Colourpop, Makeup Geek, Looxi, etc.

11. How often do you wash your makeup brushes?

Definitely not enough. Probably once a month.

12. If you could only choose to do one before leaving the house, would you do your hair or your makeup?

Makeup, for sure. I barely do my hair anyway.

13. 5 Beauty Products you couldn’t live without

  1. Morphe Jaclyn Hill palette – I can do so many looks with just this one palette. I force myself to use other palettes, but I just love this one so much.
  2. Too Faced Peach Perfect Comfort Matte Foundation – While I just got this a few months ago, it’s become my very favorite foundation. It doesn’t break up on my nose during the day, which automatically makes it a favorite. I have the shade Porcelain but I might even need a shade lighter.
  3. Marc Jacobs Beauty Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Palette in Edgitorial – I got this palette recently and love every look I have come up with. I feel like every time I use it, I look sexy. I don’t feel that way about makeup very often, but I have def fallen in love with this little palette.
  4. Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronzer in Tan-Tastic – This bronzer was limited edition, which I was so worried about since I fell in love with it. However, they recently said they are bringing it back in a month or so and it will be permanent, which is a huge relief. However, I have had it for over a year and even using it almost every day, I have yet to hit pan. So while this is almost $50, you will definitely get your money’s worth.
  5. Marc Jacobs Beauty Fineliner Ultra-Skinny Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Blacquer(Berry)– I use this eyeliner in my waterline almost daily. I think it really makes my green eyes pop.

14. What advice would you give to a beauty blogger just starting out?

I would say that consistency is key. If you are only going to blog every few months, I think you will have a very hard time gaining any sort of following. Keeping up with posting regularly and your social channels will definitely help you be more successful, depending on your goals.

And that’s it! There was a question that I deleted which was around how much money do you spend on beauty stuff per month and I just think that’s kind of personal, ya know? No need to go into our financials on the blog. I want to hear y’all’s answers! Tell me in the comments. Please. I read them all! (I say “all,” I normally get one comment and it’s from my mom.)
