Recently, Sudden Coffee reached out to me and asked if we wanted to try out some of their coffees, and of course, I said yes. As a former Starbucks barista, I am pretty much ride-or-die for their iced coffee. I get it almost daily. But to be honest, I’ve never loved their coffee. Especially when I first started a decade ago, their coffee honestly kind of tasted like burned dirt. (Sorry, not sorry.) What I’m trying to say is that I’m open to other brands of coffee, so I was interested in how these would taste.
Price: Plans start at $22/month
Box Type: Monthly box of COFFEE.
Why you’ll love it: Sudden Coffee essentially got a bunch of engineers together to figure out how to make instant coffee amazing. Which is awesome, since obviously, instant coffee is convenient. What’s even better is that they come in little tubes, so the shelf life will last

When you subscribe to Sudden Coffee, you can choose from an 8-cup plan (8 tubes) for $22/month, 16-cup plan for $40/mo or you can get a 24-cup plan which comes in a pouch versus individual tubes for $42/mo. To put this in perspective, the 8-cup plan comes out to $2.75/cup, the 16-cup plan works out to $2.50/cup and the 24-cup plan is the best value at $1.75/cup. All of these are cheaper (and more convenient!) than a Starbucks run, obviously. You can also buy a few different packages without a subscription, but those cost a bit more. You can also try a free sample where you only pay for shipping if you are nervous about investing right off the bat.
Once you select your plan, you can select which roast you prefer. Sudden Coffee actually sent me both of their coffees to try, which is awesome: Cristalina and Reyos Del Sol. Essentially, the Cristalina is their medium roast and the Reyos Del Sol is the lighter roast.
Fixing a cup was easy, I just heated up some water in the microwave, poured the Sudden coffee into my cup, and poured the hot water over. I also used a spoon to stir it up, just in case there was any lingering powder. I don’t exactly know what I thought it would taste like, but I honestly thought it might taste a bit powdery. It didn’t – at all! Both coffees were really good in their own ways, and I can truly say I liked them both.
This would be even easier at the office where they have the water bottle with the Hot Water spigot – you can skip the heating up the water part. How easy is that?!
Cristalina: This coffee was named after the cooperative that grew it – La Cristalina. The coffee itself is a medium roast, with tasting notes of fresh melon, Juicy Fruit gum and chocolate chip cookies. I definitely tasted a sweetness to this coffee which I was pleasantly surprised by. Obviously, the coffee itself isn’t sweetened, but I prefer a sweeter cup of coffee so I loved it. I was prepared to like the lighter roast (Rayos Del Soul, below) more than this one, just based on my previous preferences, but Cristalina was my favorite of the two!
Just to put it in perspective how big the tubes are and how much coffee is inside each one, I took this picture.
Rayos Del Sol: This organic coffee from Peru is roasted by Intelligentsia Coffee, which is just minutes from the Sudden Coffee HQ, which is neat. The flavors are apricot, lime, and molasses. I definitely tasted the citrus-y notes and was surprised by the slight tang. Obviously, this isn’t citrus FLAVORED, but I’m not usually the best at describing how things taste and I was surprised that I could actually taste the notes before I even looked up what they were!
And here is the side view of the Rayos Del Sol tube, so you can kind of see the lighter color, as compared to the Cristalina flavor.
As I mentioned, between the two flavors, I really liked the Rayos Del Sol flavor the best, so if I end up subscribing, I’d definitely select the medium roast. I’m also interested to see what Sudden Coffee would be over ice. I figure I would need to dissolve the powder in hot water first but then maybe pouring over ice might taste really good!
One more thing I want to say – if you are the kind of person who is concerned about the environment, you might be thinking, “Oh, those tubes could really add up.” Well, the tubes are actually biodegradable and compostable. How bout them apples? Put that in your Keurig and smoke it! (Yikes, that was really aggressive, Lauren. Calm down.)
I’m excited to bring these into work, since they are so easy to toss in my purse and stash in my desk for a lil morning or afternoon pick-me-up. And you know we all have those days.
Final Grade: A
If you are ready to break up with your daily Starbucks run, this could be the answer you’re looking for!
