I think by now, y’all know I watch beauty YouTubers pretty incessantly. But I also religiously follow the Trendmood Instagram page, which is basically a whole feed devoted to upcoming makeup releases. I even have alerts on, so I get a notification every time she posts. I know, I’m ridiculous. But I like to be up-to-date on all of the makeup news. I feel like the gal behind Trendmood works 24 hours a day because she is constantly posting new things. Whenever a makeup brand teases something on an Instagram/Snapchat story, she will screenshot and post to Trendmood. I honestly don’t know how she does it but I’m super jealous of her life, since she gets invited to most of the big makeup events, too. Brands will also leak pictures to her for her to post, and she receives a ton of PR.
I recently posted about some makeup releases I’m looking forward to, but there are also a lot of things that I have zero interest in, so I thought it might be worth discussing in an “Anti-Haul” type format. Anti-hauls are big on YouTube where instead of discussing a bunch of products you bought, you discuss your reasoning for NOT wanting to buy certain products. I think this could make for a fun monthly series since the makeup industry literally never stops and there will always be products I don’t want.
Flesh Firm Flesh Thickstick Foundation ($18): Yes, you just read that correctly. First of all, Revlon decided to name their new prestige brand, “Flesh” which is kind of gross on its own. But I’m wondering about that meeting where they were trying to decide what to name their foundation and someone suggested “Firm Flesh Thickstick.” I assume they suggested it as a joke but then someone was like, “Wait, that’s a good idea.” (It isn’t.) I don’t really mind makeup names that are a bit suggestive (NARS Orgasm, etc.) but this is a bit much. It just sounds GROSS. Even if it’s the best foundation in the world, do you really want to own it and then tell people you are wearing the Firm Flesh Thickstick on your face? No. You don’t. I just have so many questions. How many rounds of approvals did this go through before it went into production? I will say that the foundation comes in 40 shades, which is fantastic.
Tarte Love, Trust and Fairydust Collection ($110): Ugh. Tarte. Tarte used to be one of my favorite brands until recently. Their Shape Tape Foundation debacle is what really made me actively stop buying their products but honestly, I wouldn’t want to buy most of their products anyway. Their Love, Trust and Fairydust collection is awful. It truly looks like something for little kids that would be found at Claire’s. What grown up man/woman would want to own this shiz?
That palette especially – not only is it covered in purple glitter like a craft project, the inside is beige and boring just like everything else Tarte puts out. Even when their collections feature mystical creatures like mermaids and fairies, their palettes are insanely boring. I just don’t understand why they take the time to create a theme and then put 10 shades of beige brown in a palette.
Fenty Beauty Moroccan Spice Palette (Coming July 6, I think it will be $59): This palette just looks so insanely basic to me. It looks like every other warm neutral palette we own with a pop of blue, which, if you are into makeup, you probably already have a few times over. The first Fenty Beauty palette didn’t get the best reviews, as it seemed super glittery and the shades didn’t seem very pigmented. However, this particular palette does have some matte shades, which the first one didn’t have. I will say that I think the packaging is super gorgeous. This is the type of packaging I *want* to own because it would just bring you joy to open it, ya know? But at the end of the day, I don’t really care for what’s inside so the outside doesn’t matter too much.
GLAMGLOW Glow Powder ($42): I need another highlighter palette like I need a hole in the head. Notice I didn’t say “highlighters” because I will forever buy new ones – I have a problem. But in terms of a highlighter PALETTE – no matter what your skin tone is, there is bound to be at least one shade you can’t even use at all. I laugh whenever I hear influencers say you can use the other color as an eyeshadow because when is the last time you saw someone actually do that? So essentially you are paying for three colors but only able to use two of them, max. Apparently, this highlighter palette is infused with hyaluronic acid but I honestly can’t see what that can actually do for your skin since you only use a bit of highlighter on certain parts of your face. It’s like they just tried to include a buzzword that doesn’t really mean anything in this context.
Kylie Cosmetics Sorta Sweet Palette ($42): Sigh. This palette just bores the hell out of me. I liked it first when it was the Naked palette, and months ago, ABH released their Soft Glam palette ($42), which looks almost identical to this. I haven’t ever bought anything from Kylie Cosmetics, yet I’m not totally opposed to it – I just haven’t seen anything that has blown my mind yet. Kylie Cosmetics is just as expensive as makeup from Sephora except you can’t return it if you don’t like it, so I’ve been nervous to take the plunge. This is totally boring and def not worth the $42.
So those are a few products that I won’t be buying. Do you agree? Do you want something that I’m passing on? Let me know in the comments below!
xo,
Lauren
Just want to throw this out there: If you want to try Kylie Cosmetics, their superstar product to me is the Velvet liquid lipstick. The four OG shades are Charm, Harmony, Dazzle, and Rosie and honestly these are holy grail products for me. The colors don’t look super exciting, but the formula is to die for. They don’t dry down all the way so they’ll transfer, but even so, they’re so insanely pigmented that it looks like nothing even came off your lips, and they don’t smudge or bleed. They’re also weirdly smoothing, so I don’t get any of the wrinkly parched lip effect that normal matte lipsticks give. Seriously, best liquid lip formula ever. It’s like what the Julep lip creams wish they were.
I meant to respond to this last week— I’m DEF interested in the Velvet lipsticks! I think there are def some gorgeous shades so if I do place an order, I’ll pick up a few. The Koko collection almost for me. And Kim’s nude lip cremes. But I’ve never pulled the trigger! I’m sure someday I’ll see something I can’t live without and make my first order.
