Editor’s Note: I’m writing this blog during my fantasy football draft, so please excuse any errors that may be the result of carelessness or beer. The editor needs an editor. Oh well. YOLO!
I’ve seen a few YouTube videos going around where people are discussing their very first Sephora purchases, starting with Thetaylaa and then I saw Samantha Ravndahl release one as well. This made me curious about my own first Sephora orders. So I went online and scrolled as far back as I could go. I honestly think that the system has removed a bunch of items from my purchased list, but there were a lot of products that had a generic blank picture, so I think they definitely removed some products from the list that may not exist anymore. I’m also pretty sure I would have made some purchases in-store prior to the Beauty Insider program being created, so I don’t remember what those products are because I’ve lived my life since then. But we can definitely talk about the products that do exist and are listed in my account and see what I think about it and if I even still have them laying around.
First Purchase:
In my first purchase, on January 15, 2008, I bought the Benefit Dallas Box o Powder Blush ($29), and wouldn’t you know it, I still have this. I… should probably throw this away. I honestly never used this much. I usually really like the Benefit blush products but the packaging here is so bulky that I find it kind of annoying to store so it tended to get pushed to the back. I have purged my makeup since 2008, but I kept this blush around because it’s such a beautiful neutral color. But it’s probably one I won’t re-purchase because although I have literally kept it for 10 years, I don’t LOVE it.
Then I picked up one of the Stila Smudge Pots ($20). I tried to use this a few times after I got it and honestly, I should have returned it because I never really understood it. It is supposed to be a gel eyeliner and eyeshadow in one. And I now that I think about it, this would probably make a good base for a smoky eye, but I really didn’t know what to do with this back then an then it dried out.
Second Purchase:
Oh, NARS Orgasm ($30). I think NARS started the scandalous makeup names with their incredibly popular Orgasm blush. I read about it in magazine after magazine. Beauty editors lost their shit over NARS Orgasm and I had to have it. And I really did love this for years. I don’t think this was my first purchase of this at all – this might have been my 2nd or 3rd re-buy. But I don’t currently have this sitting around.
Third Purchase:
Oh, wow. That Benefit Cosmetics sampler brings me back. That was some sort of free gift but it contained this HUGE makeup bag that I still have and use, and a shower cap, not to mention a few other full-size products. They don’t do free gifts like this anymore.
I feel like every sentence I start when I look at these products starts with, “Ohhhh! Oh! Oh wow!” This is a trip down memory lane for me, so bear with me as I do it again.
Oh wow. Michael Kors perfume. I remember I first bought this because my friend Mary wore it and I loved it so much. I have bought several bottles of this over the years. I actually have a TOCCA perfume that smells very similar to this, and when I was with Melissa in Baltimore, she smelled me and was like, “Michael Kors?” It was def one of my signature scents for awhile. It’s entirely possible I will buy it again.
Fourth Purchase:
Ahhh, the memories of the BareMinerals Original Foundation ($29). I was very into BareMinerals back in the day. My best friend Amy Robinson showed me how she used it and then I went right home and bought it myself. I had my parents buy me an intro set for Christmas that contained a bunch of the different products, long before this purchase. The set came with a DVD, and my mom and I sat and watched it. And I think it was that DVD that sold my mom because she bought her own BareMinerals set and never looked back. She uses it to this day. I do not.
Ahhhh the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler (no longer available). This is one of those cult-favorite beauty products that I still use every time I do my makeup. Every beauty editor has always raved about this eyelash curler and I have to admit, it’s awesome. I think the Kevyn Aucoin eyelash curler ($21) might be similar but every other eyelash curler is inferior to this one. I’ve tried buying cheap ones to have extras at my boyfriend/now-husband’s apartment and they are all terrible. This is the best eyelash curler. Hands down.
Fifth Purchase:
The Rosebud Salve ($6) is one of my all-time favorite lip balms. I have bought at least 10 of these, minimum. Maybe 15. I usually always have one within reach. This stuff is.. the balm. (Heyo!)
Sixth Purchase:
I still really like Dolce&Gabbana The One ($76) perfume. It’s one that I may possibly buy again. I actually just convinced Matt to get the man version of The One, and it smells so, so good. I’ll post the description of this scent:
The One is a warm, oriental floral, with modern sensuality – a fragrance with a strong personality, and a contrasting golden sweetness. Created for the ultimate diva, The One is at once tempting, modern, and glamorous, embracing a touch of classicism. The top notes radiate a vibrant luminosity, with a sun-touched citrus, while warm fruity notes of luscious lychee and succulent peach add to the delight. The passionate heart evokes an exploding femininity, with an opulent floral soul, creating a distinct, audacious signature. An unexpected hint of plum glows as the base finally blooms with luscious allure into the lasting warmth of vanilla and sweetened ambery-musk notes.
That’s a bunch of bullshit but it smells really good.
Seventh Purchase:
In 2010, I was clearly still into BareMinerals. See above!
Eighth Purchase:
I used the Clinique All About Eyes ($32.50) eye cream for a long time. I think this was a good cream for me for when I was younger but I think I’ve moved on little in terms of eye creams. I need a few more potent ingredients in there. But this cream was super moisturizing, especially the rich version, and I didn’t have any complaints when I used it.
Ninth Purchase:
Well, y’all already know how I feel about the Rosebud Salve. I think it’s interesting because i think Stila was so much more popular back in the day. I remember getting some Stila makeup I really liked after college, and they were popular for awhile and then they sort of fell away. But now they are getting popular again with their Glitter & Glow eye products. The Stila Lip & Cheek Stain is an interesting product. I remember it so specifically because I wore it during such a specific time in my life. I liked that it was a nice stain on the lips but the actual component was a bit difficult. You had to twist the pen to click out little drops of the product and sometimes you felt like you were turning forever. I didn’t wear it on my cheeks very much, but I did like this.
Tenth Purchase:
Oh wow. The Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil! This was my first foray into oil cleansers and quite honestly, I’ve never looked back! I am not sure if this was my actual first purchase of this product but I definitely bought a few of these. Now I’m pretty dedicated to the two-step cleansing method, using oil first to break down your makeup followed by a cleanser to clean your skin. I’m currently devoted to the Julep Cleansing oil but it’s possible I’ll try a new one when I run out since I no longer subscribe to Julep.
I haven’t been talking about samples in this blog yet but these two totally bring me back to a moment in time. I actually had a full-size of the Kate Walsh Boyfriend perfume. It smelled really, really good. And I can vividly remember what that Jennifer Aniston perfume smells like. I can’t remember if I ever had a full-size of that one or just a rollerball, but it smelled sooo beachy in some way.
And there you have it! My “first” ten purchases from Sephora. I’m curious about some of y’all’s first purchases! It takes some time to scroll all the way back, but it’s a fun stroll down memory lane. Let me know in the comments!

Lauren, This was a fun and interesting blog! I had forgotten how we watched the Bare Minerals dvd together. And yes, a few month later I bought into the entire BM philosophy. It has worked well for me then (18 years ago) and it still does today. Thanks for the memories. ❤️ mom
I hope you were able to get some half-off mineral veil at ulta! ❤️
