I’ve been buying a lot of the special-edition Sephora PLAY! boxes, but I have to admit, the regular monthly PLAY! by Sephora this month was pretty freaking great. There were six products total, one was a full-size, and one was a huge deluxe sample, so the value of this $10 box is pretty awesome!

Play! by Sephora

Price: $10/month

Box Type: Beauty products, 5-6 deluxe samples

Why you’ll love it: Ummmm, did you see it’s all fun products that come from Sephora? Some boxes will send you random products from brands you’ve never heard of before but Play! by Sephora will only send you brands from their own store – basically all high end fun things you are excited to try! Here’s a breakdown of the benefits:

  • The awesome products, of course.
  • The $10 you spend earns you Beauty Insider points if you are already part of their rewards program. (I’m VIB Rouge because I clearly have A Problem buying makeup.)
  • Each month you will also receive a card that you can bring into Sephora that will earn you 50 additional bonus points on your purchase!

As always, each Play! by Sephora box comes with 50 bonus points, and I honestly need to get better about taking advantage of this benefit. Usually, I shop online and there are sometimes better deluxe samples I can take advantage of versus getting 50 points. But I need to keep this in mind, especially since there are better rewards these days.

And here is everything we got from Play! by Sephora this month! Of course, all the details are below.

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Perfector Skin Tint Foundation – Shade 6 ($36): This actually seems like a foundation I would really like except that Shade 6, Warm Sand, is several shades too deep for me, so I would never be able to give this a good wear test. That aside, the foundation is very light, with just a hint of coverage, and when I tried it on my hand, I could see some blurring properties. I’m into super light foundation these days, so this really does seem up my alley. I’m also really interested with experimenting and trying out more light foundations so I might actually try to pick up a sample of this in my shade sometime.

Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer ($34): Let’s be honest about what this is – it’s a lightweight moisturizer. That is all this is. I sort of think it’s funny that we are calling moisturizers primers now, when primers are fairly unnecessary if your skincare is up to par. But now that the beauty industry is cashing in on the whole primer situation, we have products like this that are essentially moisturizers. That doesn’t mean this is a bad product though – I think it’s totally fine. I will probably use this in lieu of a moisturizer prior to applying my makeup. But when it’s gone, I won’t be getting more – a regular water cream moisturizer will give you similar results.

Peter Thomas Roth Hungarian Thermal Water Mineral-Rich Atomic Heat Mask ($58): This mask was a really interesting texture – it was slightly grainy – but like, ALMOST smooth. It sort of reminds me of the consistency of toothpaste – you know where it’s just the SLIGHTEST bit grainy? And so you apply the product on your dry face and wait a few minutes. Then, when you go to rinse it off, you feel a quick warmth and then… poof, it’s gone. It happens so fast you’re kind of like, “Wait, did that just happen?” I am honestly not sure if this mask did anything for my skin. I normally like Peter Thomas Roth products but I’m almost positive this one is very gimmicky. Obviously, this product didn’t make my skin WORSE or anything, but I would save your $60 and spend it on something different.

Boscia Cactus Water Moisturizer ($38): I am really happy with the sheer amount of product in this deluxe sample, as this will last me a long time. The consistency of this moisturizer is actually a bit tacky, which I personally think makes it great for layering under makeup. I think it actually helps makeup stick to it a bit, which is partly what makes it a great primer, in my opinion. I don’t think this is the most exceptionally moisturizing moisturizer on the planet, but for this combo girl, it’s plenty. I think a little of this product will go a long way, so I think the $38 price tag is pretty fair, and you’ll get decent mileage out of it.

Chloé Nomade Eau de Parfum ($30 – $132): I think I’ve talked about this before, but Chloé is one of those fashion brands that I romanticize in my head. In my head, I have these status symbols that I hope to own someday that might equate to “success.” I know we all define success differently but there are a few designer things I have in my mind, and one of those things is a Chloé purse. (Maybe I’ll write a blog about my other designer fantasies? Let me know!) I feel like Chloé is that eternally cool-girl brands, and I love her original scent. Nomade isn’t my favorite and I won’t be getting the full-size, but it wasn’t AWFUL or anything. I just like other scents more right now. But I’ll show you the Sephora description below because, who knows! It may appeal to you!

Key Notes:
Oakmoss, Freesia, Mirabelle Liquor

Nomade Eau de Parfum is the essence of a free-spirited and confident women, taking inspiration from her experiences and encounters throughout the world and asserting who she is.

The intense mineral character of oakmoss is enveloped in the voluptuous softness of mirabelle plum. From this freshness emanates a bright floral note carried by freesia. Natural ingredients brought into focus by the perfumer Quentin Bisch, revealing accords as exhilarating as the feeling of escape they inspire.

Nudestix Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil in Kiss ($24): Ummm how cool is it that Sephora included a full-sized $24 lipstick in a $10 box?! That’s so rad. I’ve been so interested about Nudestix lately. A few of my favorite Influencers are always raving about some of their products but I’ve never quite pulled the trigger on an all-pencil eye look. It makes me nervous, especially when I have a house full of eyeshadow palettes I could be using. I think the formula of this lipstick was really nice – it wasn’t overly drying like a liquid lipstick, and didn’t sink into every single line and make my lips look like they are shriveling into themselves. Always a win. However, the color was just a little strange so I’m not sure I’m going to be reaching for this. But I really did enjoy the formula, so I may consider getting a different color someday. And who knows, maybe I’ll try one of the eye pencils, too. TBD.

Final Grade: A

This was an amazing PLAY! by Sephora box! I still can’t believe there was a full-size Nudestix product in here, which is 2.5x the value of the whole box! I’m mostly excited about the Boscia Cactus Water moisturizer. I think this will be a much better primer than the Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer, though I’ll use that one as well. And it’s always fun to try new masks, like the bougie fancy one from Peter Thomas Roth.

This really is an awesome box for just $10! If you are interested in subscribing for yourself, click here!
