I know it seems like it’s been All Sephora Boxes All The Time around here lately, so I think I am going to tone it down a bit on the one-off, non-subscription Sephora boxes, but I am definitely not getting rid of my regular monthly Sephora box, which is what we are discussing today!

Play! by Sephora

Price: $10/month

Box Type: Beauty products, 5-6 deluxe samples

Why you’ll love it: Ummmm, did you see it’s all fun products that come from Sephora? Some boxes will send you random products from brands you’ve never heard of before but Play! by Sephora will only send you brands from their own store – basically all high end fun things you are excited to try! Here’s a breakdown of the benefits:

  • The awesome products, of course.
  • The $10 you spend earns you Beauty Insider points if you are already part of their rewards program. (I’m VIB Rouge because I clearly have A Problem buying makeup.)
  • Each month you will also receive a card that you can bring into Sephora that will earn you 50 additional bonus points on your purchase!

What I really like is that Sephora is now sending plastic makeup bags instead of an actual little makeup bag. I really don’t need a new makeup bag (that would never in a billion years hold the makeup I would actually need it to) which is why I stopped subscribing to Ipsy years ago. They could honestly forgo the bag altogether, but at least I can recycle this one.

I forgot to take a picture of the insert that describes all the products, but if you look at the rest of our blogs, you will get the idea. On one side, it describes all the products, and on the other side, they have a theme. This month, it was easy Halloween costume ideas. It was cute, but I can’t find it! I’m sorry!

Here are all the products we received this month!

Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin in Y245 ($38): Dang, it’s a bummer that they included a shade that it a few shades too dark for me, or else I would really like to try this! I honestly might go in-store and get a sample to see if I like it. I have been steering clear from full-coverage, matte foundations, but as an oilier girl- no. That sounds gross, Lauren. As an oily-skinned girl. Yes. That is better. As an oily-skinned gal, I do like to see what brands wear for a long time on my skin without breaking up and creasing for special occasions and days when I need my makeup to last. So far, my fave foundations are the Too Faced Peach Perfect Comfort Matte Foundation ($36) and the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte 24-Hour Foundation ($12.99). I definitely do want to see if the Make Up For Ever version will make the ranks because it has a reeeeally good shade range, so I think this could work for a lot of people.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Quench Hydrating Primer ($32): This reminds me so much of Belif’s Aqua Bomb! If your skin needs more moisture prior to applying foundation, this could be for you. I feel like I would be ok with Belif’s Aquabomb, since I have that already, but if you have dry skin and are in need of a new primer, this would probably be really nice for you! Now that I think about it, if you have dryer skin, this primer would probably work really well under the Make Up For Ever foundation!

Caualie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum ($79): I’m very interested in this serum, from this description (taken from Sephora’s site) alone:

A highly concentrated, natural, oil-free serum that combats dark spots, evens skin tone, and boosts radiance—and proven to be 62 times more effective than vitamin C.

Y’all know how I feel about vitamin C, so this makes me excited. I think I will try to use this for a week (or as long as it lasts) to see if I see a difference on my skin! I’m excited. I’ve gotten a few serums from Caudalie lately that excite me, so who knows – it’s possible I may buy a full-size of one of these someday!

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser ($38): This cleanser is super soft and creamy, almost cushion-y, and would never over-dry skin. If you’ve ever used Philosphy Purity, I think you would like this. It’s sort of basic but still really nice. I’ve never bought the full-size of this, but quite honestly, I might end up getting it someday. I think it will make an excellent second cleanse after first washing off makeup with an oil cleanser. I’m running out of my go-to cleanser, so I’ll definitely use this

Maison Margiela ‘REPLICA’ Sailing Day ($126): Do any of y’all remember Jennifer Aniston’s perfume? The one that used to be in Sephora years ago? I used to get samples of it with purchases and this scent reminds me so much of that. Jennifer Aniston’s fragrance is no longer sold anymore so I won’t be able to compare it. But her scent was very intentionally beach-y, and this one is meant to evoke emotions from a sailing day. This probably isn’t a fragrance I would purchase, but it does smell really nice. Below is what Sephora says about it.

Scent Type: Fresh Aquatics Key Notes: Aquatic Accord, Coriander, Red Seaweed Essence

About: Sailing Day is a fresh fragrance that recalls the memory of soft rolling waves and the spirit of the sea through aromatic and pure notes of aquatic accord, iris asbolute, and red seaweed accord. Explore the infinite deep blue and feel the freshness of the ocean spray through notes of juniper essence and a unique aquatic accord. Dive deep into the sea and feel the refreshing sensation of rose superessence and a sharp adrenalin rush of iris and coriander. Navigating your sails in a new direction, charter through grounding notes of red seaweed essence and salty ambergris accord as you explore the ocean’s abyss.

Benefit Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel in 01 Light ($24): I was kind of bummed because this shade is way too light for me. Even though I have platinum blonde hair, I like my brows to look more like my natural color, so I tend to tint them a darker brown. However – y’all – I have found a new favorite AFFORDABLE brow gel – the Colourpop Brow Boss ($6)! They used to only have clear brow gel, but now they have a few tinted versions, and it’s AWESOME. It has the exact kind of brush that my holy grail Glossier Boy Brow but WAY LESS EXPENSIVE. If you are in the market for brow things, I recommend checking out the Colourpop things, they have pomade, pencils and brow gels!

Final Grade: B

This box would have gotten an A if the foundation and brow gel were good shade matches for me. But I def won’t be able to use them as-is, which automatically removes them from the running. I am excited to use the Fresh cleanser and the Caudalie serum though!

A self-proclaimed beauty junkie/hoarder with a serious Sephora problem. This blog is a total rationalization of that problem. Everything is TOTALLY fine. Her free time is a mixed combination of making fun of reality TV with her husband, hanging out with cats and finally trying to figure out how to do her hair.

  1. I had to look up “aquatic accord” because all it sounded like to me was the exact opposite of the RHONY Cartagena boat trip. 😂😂
