My friend Kristen and I were talking in a makeup group about various products during one of the Sephora sales and she was telling me how much she loved one of the shades of the Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Shadows ($29) she got (I think she had Reflect) and I was immediately intrigued and wanted them all. But… at $29/each, that is a bit pricey. I was telling Matt about how pretty they are and he was like, “I want to buy them for you!” And I was like, “No, that is too much.” And then he was like, “I should make you an eyeshadow advent calendar for Christmas!” And thus… Makeup Advent Calendar was born. It evolved to include more than eyeshadow. But… he did manage to give me four of these shadows, and they are all beautiful. I’ve been wearing them a lot since I got them, so my thought on them are pretty solid. Read on for my full review of four of the shades!

(Quite honestly, I thought I had them all until I sat down to write this and realized I am missing one! But it’s a bronzy shade and I think I’m probably good without it. Until I inevitably buy it.)

Review

(Reflect, Aura, Foil, Smoke)

Sigh. They are all so satisfying just to look at. Little pots of glittery magic!

As I mentioned before, the Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Shadows are $29 each, and come in little pots. They are basically a hybrid of a loose pigment and a pressed powder shadow, and contain the tiniest glitter particles I’ve ever seen. The pots come with a little plastic stamp thing that helps keep the shadows pressed down and compact.

I once heard these described as “elegant” glitters, and I thought that was such an accurate description. These have the finest, tiniest but also shiniest glitter particles I’ve ever seen. This ain’t yo’ momma’s craft glitter, y’all.

In terms of application, I use my fingers 100% of the time. I think you could probably use a synthetic brush as well, but I think using your fingers gives the best color payoff. Plus, it’s super easy to dab them on my lid. Typically what I will do is use my fingers to dab on eyelid, as I just described, but then I’ll grab another palette (usually ABH Soft Glam) to put a bit of matte shadow to deepen my crease and on my lower lash line. But the whole process from start to finish takes like 3 minutes, so it’s an incredibly easy but also super gorgeous look. Of course, you can use these shadows to enhance a super glam look as well. But I’ve really enjoyed the ease of a simple, pretty look.

Here are a few pics of me wearing a few of the shadows. I didn’t plan well enough to get pics of myself wearing all four, but eh. I’ve been working close to 50 hours a week since I got back from surgery, so we can’t have it all. 🙂

Swatches

Here are the swatches of four of the Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadows! I was most excited to receive Reflect, because of the aforementioned conversation with Kristen, but also because it was sold out FOREVERRR which somehow made me want it more. I think I’ve worn Reflect the most since I got it, but the shade that surprised me the most is Aura. I’ve done some really pretty natural looks wearing it in combination with the Dose of Colors Bathe highlighter ($28), which is in a similar tone, for an all-over light monochromatic look. I definitely look forward to wearing it more.

Close-Ups

Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadow in Foil ($29): This is a super sparkly gold.

Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadow in Smoke ($29): This is a gorgeous neutral taupe-y shimmer.

Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadow in Aura ($29): This is the prettiest shade of pink that isn’t too aggressively pink, if you know what I mean. It’s more of a neutral pink.

Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadow in Reflect ($29): This is a champagne that leans on the peachy side.

Colourpop Dupe???

As I was getting ready to take pictures of the Scattered Light shadows, I thought I would dig into my Colourpop Super Shock Shadow stash to see if I had any that looked similar. I have at least 50 Super Shock Shadows so I thought I’d for sure be able to dupe out almost all of them,  but to my surprise, I only really found one similar shade.

This is Colourpop’s Super Shock Shadow in Lightning Bug ($5). Mine is a bit on the older side so I think a newer version of it would be a little smoother and even more like Hourglass Foil. But even so, the shades are SO similar. I think you’d be able to get an almost identical look with the Colourpop version,

Final Grade: A+

I love the Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter eyeshadows and have been incorporating them into my routine, upwards of several days a week! (For someone with such an extensive eyeshadow collection, this is actually a big deal!) I recently edited down my makeup area in my bathroom but made sure I kept space for these. They are pricy but if you’re eyeing one of them in particular that you think you’d use regularly, it might be worth the investment! Do you *need* all of them? Probably not. But if you have the cash and you love eyeshadow, I know you would really enjoy these!
